Choosing Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic

Dr. Mallory Harris, ND

When checking things off your list for this Septembers back to school shopping, it is important to be mindful of what your stationary and lunch containers are made of. Choosing eco friendly, non-toxic products can not only to protect you and or your child’s health but also protect the environment.

Many school supplies contain toxins that can disrupt your endocrine system causing a shift in your hormone balance.

Here are a few chemicals to steer clear of:

  • Phalates

    • chemicals that are added to plastics to help make them more flexible and are often found in bendable plastic binders.
  • PVC (vinyl)

    • one of the most widely used plastics and is one of the most toxic substances currently saturating our planet.
  • BPA

    • used in plastic lunch containers and water bottles as a protective lining but can leak into food and water.

Plastic school supplies also contaminate the environment. Purchasing biodegradable products that don’t require solvents are ideal but ensuring that your items are made from recycled products and are recyclable can also help.

The package your supplies come in is almost as important as the item itself with regards to impact on the environment. Be mindful and aim for purchasing cardboard/paper based packaging vs. plastic.

Help promote the industrial transition and increase the demand of PVC free and BPA free products.
